Life: Renewed

VT Route 100 over Branch Brook Bridge
Ludlow, VT

Managed by the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), the VT Route 100 over Branch Brook Bridge was an 82-foot single span steel girder bridge originally constructed in 1966. To replace the bridge deck, which was in poor condition, our team implemented a number of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques, including the use of full-depth precast concrete deck panels – the first project of its kind in the State of Vermont.

Collaboration

To achieve a smooth bridge deck installation, Fuss & O’Neill worked closely with project managers from VTrans as well as with Town personnel. Our team evaluated deck replacement options that would ensure that traffic disruption would be held to a minimum.

Impact

While using full-depth precast deck replacement panels in Ludlow was the first project of its kind constructed in the state, the benefits of using this technology could advance similar projects. Being able to execute a full replacement with just a 10-day closure of the bridge is cost-effective and does not require the use of temporary structures or phased construction.
