Traffic going into Center Ludlow and nearby Okemo Mountain Resort – a popular local attraction during all seasons – is often heavier during the summer, when the construction season in Vermont is at its peak. This project was coordinated closely with another nearby bridge project in an effort to avoid multiple bridge closures at the same time.
To achieve a smooth bridge deck installation, Fuss & O’Neill worked closely with project managers from VTrans as well as with Town personnel. Our team evaluated deck replacement options that would ensure that traffic disruption would be held to a minimum.
By using full-depth precast concrete deck panels, our team was able to replace the bridge deck while using only a 10-day bridge closure, thus minimizing traffic disruption. A special mix of rapid set concrete was used for the backwall and approach slab reconstruction. The 40-foot long precast panels were fabricated off-site and installed in less than one day. Leveling bolts were adjusted at each panel to provide the correct roadway profile and cross-slope to ensure that, once installed, the bridge would provide passengers with a safe, smooth ride.
While using full-depth precast deck replacement panels in Ludlow was the first project of its kind constructed in the state, the benefits of using this technology could advance similar projects. Being able to execute a full replacement with just a 10-day closure of the bridge is cost-effective and does not require the use of temporary structures or phased construction.
