Wetlands Assessment and Restoration

Fuss & O’Neill provided science and engineering services to restore approximately 11.5 acres of wetlands on a 350-acre active horse and agricultural farm located in eastern Connecticut. Currently, this project is the largest active wetland mitigation project in the state.

Wetlands were filled and disturbed over a number of years. We worked with U.S. EPA, U..S. ACE, CTDEEP, and the local Inland Wetland and Watercourses Agency as part of this restoration project. Historic alterations included both wetland and waterways. Unique features of this project include:

  • Identified areas of historical wetland disturbance that occurred from 1970 to the present based on interpretation of aerial photographs and soil test pits.
  • Assessed wetlands areas and characterized their potential to support vernal pool species.
  • Designed and oversaw wetland restoration and site stabilization activities for a wide range of wetland habitats.
  • Coordinated and performed investigation to the satisfaction of appropriate federal, state, and local officials and avoided involvement by the U.S. Department of Justice.
