I-93 Widening Bridge and Culvert Replacement

Fuss & O’Neill provided the engineering associated with the widening of three bridges and three culverts, and the construction of soundwalls, detention basins, and wildlife corridors on I-93.

The Southbound Bodwell Road/Cohas Brook Bridges were widened by 16 feet and the existing Northbound Bridges were widened by 12 feet to accommodate an extra lane of traffic in each direction. The widening included the construction of new stub abutments on piles attached to the existing abutments. New steel girders with cast-in-place concrete decks were erected to accommodate the widening. The cast-in-place concrete Cohas Brook culvert was lengthened approximately 75 feet to accommodate the highway widening. Two other culverts will have MSE walls constructed on top of them to act as tall headwalls to accommodate ramp widenings. The ramp above the other culvert was temporarily widened using lightweight backfill.
