Providence, RI – Engineering firm Fuss & O’Neill and the Town of Barrington were awarded the American Planning Association Rhode Island Chapter (APA RI) 2020 Award for Excellent Comprehensive Plan for the completion of the Bay Spring Neighborhood Resilience Plan. This resilience plan was a collaborative effort that included the Town of Barrington, Fuss & O’Neill, the Bay Spring Community Center, and Save the Bay.
With an extensive coastline and significant sections of town within low-lying areas near the shore, Barrington is one of Rhode Island’s most vulnerable communities to natural hazards. Confronting this challenge, the Town of Barrington is making its community more resilient to climate events and sea level rise through the creation of the Resilience Plan for the Bay Spring neighborhood. The neighborhood is a priority for the Town with respect to climate resilience, as it is surrounded by waterbodies on three sides. The Bay Spring Resilience Plan is one of the only neighborhood-based plans in Rhode Island; the planning and community engagement process was successful in building consensus from residents and stakeholders regarding goals and steps forward for a more climate-resilient Bay Spring neighborhood. Through this comprehensive and holistic plan, the Town of Barrington was able to secure funding through the award of the Climate Resilience Fund Grant from RIDEM to facilitate design and implementation.
