Construction of The Shack begins in Interstate 195 Redevelopment District

PROVIDENCE – Construction of the temporary popup The Shack, a partnership led by the owners of The Shop in Fox Point, has begun in the southern portion of Parcel 22 in the Interstate 195 Redevelopment District.

The project involves a food concession, event venue and public space, and is intended to inject life into a sometimes-barren looking expanse of vacant land.

The project involves owners of The Shop, a coffee shop and café at 460 Wickenden St., as well as Dune Brothers Seafood, landscape architect Design Under Sky, and the event and creative marketing company Stay Silent PVD.

The Shack is expected to be open for lunch and dinner year-round and is envisioned as a seafood hut that will feature sustainably sourced New England seafood dishes. It is located in front of 1 Ship St.

In a recent meeting, the I-195 Redevelopment District Commission agreed to spend $350,000 in district redevelopment funds to establish the temporary food concession, install artwork at 1 Ship St. and temporary outdoor furnishings.

The venue is considered temporary, as a placeholder until permanent development is erected in the district. The installation is expected to be in place for about two years, according to an overview published by the I-195 district commission.
