CANTON — Residents have approved hiring a consultant to write design standards that will govern new construction, which proponents said promotes development while preserving the community’s character.
The $71,200 in funding approved by residents will pay for a consultant who will write design standards for new development in Collinsville and along Route 44. People who spoke in support of the proposal said it would let the town determine what new construction will look like while also giving prospective developers the firm guidelines they need to move forward with projects.
“The process we are using now is broken because the people involved have too much arbitrary control,” said Arnold Goldman, a former president of the Canton Chamber of Commerce. “This will give predictability for businesses and protect the character of our town.”
