Strategic Growth by a Strategic Approach to Acquisition

Growth is crucial to the overall health of a company. As a firm that has been evolving and embracing new opportunities for more than a century, Fuss & O’Neill’s success is founded on continuous growth and adaptation. Sometimes growth is practical and gradual, perhaps based on shifting markets or socioeconomic-environmental changes. However, growth can often be swift and deliberate – a strategic organizational objective to strengthen competitive advantage and improve financial performance.

Fuss & O’Neill’s considerable employee growth is due to both organic (individual hiring) and organized (acquisitions) employment strategies. We have acquired three firms in the last eight years, and two of those partnerships occurred last year. In 2024, Fuss & O’Neill welcomed Eastern Massachusetts firms Onsite Wastewater Solutions and Bayside Engineering.

The integration of these firms has brought opportunities for both teams. The talented staff at Bayside previously focused mainly on transportation, bridge, and survey services. Now their subject matter experts are integrating their practical knowledge of Massachusetts solutions into resilience projects, housing developments, and educational facility improvements – which brings new opportunities for career development. Conversely, former Bayside staff have brought their experience with MassDOT to Fuss & O’Neill, helping our entire Transportation team work better with the Department and explore new opportunities. Norm Brown, PE, PLS, former President of Bayside, is now a Vice President at Fuss & O’Neill. For him, the transformation is clear:

It’s incredibly fulfilling to sit down with a potential client and, instead of representing a 20-person firm, know I have over 400 colleagues behind me, ready to provide a broader range of services.

Former Onsite personnel have been working on new types of projects, in new regions, and with new clients. They have taken on leadership roles within Fuss & O’Neill and are serving as mentors to Fuss & O’Neill employees. This has created a sharing of expertise that provides both professional development and expanded client service. The talented Onsite staff have expanded our decentralized wastewater treatment services. David Formato, PE, former President of Onsite and now a Senior Vice President at Fuss & O’Neill’s reflects:

After a year, I can say, unequivocally, that our gut feeling about Fuss & O’Neill being a great place to work was spot on. The culture is the reason this past year has been exciting and fulfilling – and I’m excited for what’s to come
