McClelland Farm Road over BMRR

Fuss & O’Neill provided the design for the complete replacement of an existing single span, 76-foot-long steel stringer bridge that was constructed in 1905.

The bridge abutments were original, constructed in 1905 and the superstructure was replaced in 1950. The bridge was in poor condition and due to movement at some of the bearings a timber crib tower was installed.

Fuss & O’Neill evaluated several bridge types and a 76-foot single span bridge with curved steel girders was selected. The location of the proposed bridge and approach roadway was shifted to improve site distance. The bridge will be constructed in two phases to maintain traffic and prevent interruption of the active rail yard below. Sidewalks were added to the bridge to improve pedestrian access and safety and two water mains were relocated to avoid interference with the new substructures. One main was relocated using directional drilling under the existing roadway embankment.
