Under our Task-based Bridge Rehabilitation/ Replacement On-call Contract, Fuss & O’Neill designed the rehabilitation of Bridge No. 00255, a 182-foot-long, two-span steel beam and concrete deck structure that carries Interstate 395 northbound and southbound over Route 85 (Hartford Turnpike) and a commuter parking lot at Exit 77.

This project included:

• Replacing the existing 7.25-inch-thick reinforced concrete deck with 8.5-inch-thick precast reinforced concrete deck panels with waterproofing membrane and bituminous overlay.
• Eliminating the raised median and installing a new median barrier between the northbound and southbound roadways.
• Replacing all four lines of bearings with elastomeric bearings
• Repairing and fully painting the steel superstructure and patching the substructure.
• Lowering the Route 85 profile by milling and overlaying in order to achieve a minimum vertical clearance under the bridge of 14’-7”.
• Closing mainline I-395 and re-routing traffic across Route 85 via existing off and on ramps, implementing temporary signalization, and regional detours.
