Windsor Upper Dam Improvements

Windsor Upper Dam was constructed in 1834 to provide power to downstream mills. The dam was constructed of locally-quarried granite blocks and a rubble-filled core to a height of 40 feet, a base width of 36 feet, crest width of 12 feet, and 360 feet long. The dam was significantly impacted by the flooding from Hurricane Irene in August 2011. Emergency Repairs were completed in 2011, but additional work was required as well.

Fuss & O’Neill partnered with GeoDesign, Inc. in assisting the Town in the design, permitting, funding, and construction administration of the improvements to the dam. Specific improvements included consolidation grouting along the length of the dam to provide mass and increased stability at the dam. The work also included the addition of vertical and inclined dowels, sub-horizontal drains, and verification coring to confirm the extent of grout placement within the dam.
