Traffic remix for ‘The X’ in Springfield gets closer

SPRINGFIELD — Residents of the Forest Park neighborhood are about six months away from seeing new designs for a revamped “X” intersection.

But construction on the traffic-clogged and complicated intersection is at least two years away, said Christopher Cignoli, city Department of Public Works director. He promised this week that there will be a public hearing to go over proposed changes once designs are in hand.

The city completed a final planning study about a year ago after presenting six potential reconstruction scenarios for the intersection. One idea that was strongly opposed by residents and the City Council was a new loop road through Forest Park.

Engineering firm Fuss & O’Neill, which has a local branch in West Springfield, has been hired to do detailed design work for a revamp of the intersection of Sumner and Belmont avenues and Dickinson Street. The firm is doing a field survey and collecting traffic and pedestrian data, Cignoli said.
