South Street / US Route 7 Improvements

Fuss & O’Neill designed major roadway improvements to South Street, the highest-volume corridor in the city. The 7,600 foot roadway starts south of the Berkshire Life Insurance Driveway and extends north beyond the Reed Street intersection.

Our team implemented long-planned capacity, safety, and non-vehicular accommodation improvements including new traffic signal equipment at six locations, revised crosswalks with new handicap ramps, new sidewalks, roadway reconstruction, pavement markings, and a new tree-lined streetscape complete with improved bicycle accommodations.

Throughout the design process, we considered the concerns of local residents, regional traffic needs, and MassDOT design standards. During construction, we assisted with value engineering project changes to reduce costs.

This project ensures that South Street, one of the busiest corridors in Berkshire County, can safely accommodate vehicular and non-vehicular users in the future.
