Fuss & O'Neill Employees Embark on First Annual "East Coast Greenway Bike-to-Work Challenge"

30 March, 2007

Fuss & O'Neill, an engineering consulting firm with offices in CT, MA, NY, NC and SC, is offering their employess a unique opportunity this summer - get in shape, save on gas, and help benefit the ECG!

Beginning April 1st, employees from any Fuss & O'Neill office can start biking to work as frequently (or infrequently) as they like. In addition to getting in shape, avoiding traffic, saving on gas, and all the other benefits associated with leaving the car at home, Fuss & O'Neill will donate $0.10 to the East Coast Greenway Alliance for each mile biked. At the end of the summer, the participants who racked up the most miles will win prizes, which the Employee Committee insures will be very cool! (The ECGA will offer some goodies as well!)

While "bike to work" programs are becoming more common, this is the first time a company has focused their program on the East Coast Greenway. Fuss & O'Neill's Employee Committee, the originators of the idea, say they have gotten an "overwhelming response from folks who are jazzed about biking to work."

If you're interested in developing a similar program for your company, here are some of the Fuss & O'Neill's FAQs that may be helpful to you:

  • Can I take the long way home to get more miles? - Of course you can. But you will only earn "credit" for the number of miles you didn't drive. So if your normal commute is 10 miles and you ride 15 miles going the scenic way, you will earn 10 miles toward your total.

  • My commute route is not bike friendly and I'd like to avoid the morgue for as long as possible! - Consider driving to a "Park & Ride" and taking your bike for a portion of your commute. You will earn miles for the portion of your commute that you didn't drive.

  • I can't commit to doing this everyday. Can I still play? - Absolutely! Ride once a week, days when it's not raining, every other Thursday, or whenever you don't need to drop off the kids. The choice is yours!

  • How do you determine the winners? - Participants will e-mail the coordinator with their mileage each week. Honor system is in effect.

  • How will I know where I stand? - Everyone who participates will win in the end, but for those of you with a competitive bent, updated standings will be posted to the Intranet weekly.

  • But there are sucky hills along my commute - Tough cookies.

Fuss & O'Neill has been a strong supporter of the ECG in many ways over the years - they have created ECG maps, designed several miles of ECG, and have been a long-time supporter of our CT effort, both financially and with staff time. Currently they are ECGA Chamber of Commerce members and stewards of the Charter Oak Greenway, and ECG segment.

The ECGA thanks Fuss & O'Neill for including us in the Bike-to-Work Challenge, and we wish all the participants the best of luck!
