Columbia, SC – The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Education asked Fuss & O’Neill to provide environmental training and field sampling technique demonstrations to a group of approximately 80 attendees at the annual Environmental Crimes Seminar. Attendees included attorneys from the Department of Justice Environmental Crimes Section, Assistant U.S. Attorneys from 30 Districts, and scientists from the EPA National Enforcement Investigations Center.
The training was conducted by Blake Burgess, Jeff Lackovic, and Thom Bristol from our Columbia South Carolina Office. Mr. Lackovic then coordinated and presented the classroom portion at the National Advocacy Center on several topics including an overview of sampling methods and common problems seen with sampling and laboratory analysis. Mr. Burgess and Mr. Bristol conducted the field demonstration portion of the training at former landfill and included: common soil and groundwater sampling techniques, field screening methods, monitoring well construction methods, and proper sample preservation and custody procedures.
The National Advocacy Center in Columbia, SC is operated by the U.S. Department of Justice, Executive Office for United States Attorneys and is on the grounds of the University of South Carolina. The facility was built to train federal, state, and local prosecutors and litigators in advocacy skills and management of legal operations. The Center is located a short 8 blocks from Fuss & O’Neill’s downtown Columbia office.
