WHAT’S THIS ABOUT?
Having knowledgeable and productive employees can be a company’s greatest asset in a highly competitive business world. And to assist companies maintaining their skilled employees, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CTDEP) is providing outreach designed to improve the understanding of and compliance with Connecticut’s Hazardous Waste Regulations by businesses in the commercial and industrial sectors.

As part of  this outreach program, the CT DEP is offering training seminars at no cost to the attendees.  The seminars will be offered on several dates at locations throughout the State, and will provide Small Quantity Generator (SQG) facilities with guidance to comply with Connecticut’s Hazardous Waste Regulations.

WHO DOES IT APPLY TO?

The Hazardous Waste regulations apply to generators of hazardous waste.  Businesses that may generate hazardous waste include but are not limited to:

  • Metal Working Shops
  • Lawn and Garden Centers
  • Health Care Providers
  • Laundries and Dry Cleaners
  • Vehicle Maintenance and Dismantling Shops
  • Chemical Laboratories
  • Furniture and Wood Refinishers
  • Hardware Stores
  • Printers

WHAT ARE COMMON HAZARDOUS WASTES?
The types of wastes considered hazardous are expansive.  Some of the most common examples include waste adhesives, oil-based paints, spent solvents, and waste acids or caustics.

WHAT IS A SMALL QUANTITY GENERATOR (SQG)?
An SQG is a facility that generates between 100 and 1,000 kg (220 and 2,200 pounds or approximately 26 to 260 gallons) of hazardous waste per calendar month.
